    No Zotter,

I don't think you are advocating "new laws".  If anything, I think you are advocating new thought processes.  Everyone knows that distractions are not a help on the road.  I would like to think that things like cell phones could be controlled without new laws.  That said, of course, I know that the military has made it an offense to use your cell phone while driving without a hands free device.  I think thats a great thing.

However, I think the real key is just to change the publics' impression of motorcycle riders.  They look right through us and pull out anyway.  This seems to be something of an American thing, because I understand in other countries there is not nearly as much of a problem.  Perhaps the biggest issue is the surge in the number of riders of late.  Americans just aren't used to there being so many of us where Europeans are.  Perhaps that will change over time.

Re: New Laws are not needed

I hate to disagree on this one, because I don't generally agree with new laws, and better enforcement is the answer. That is till I found out about laws on Right of Way Violations. In West Virginia until last year there was a $25 fine for killing a biker with your car. Hunting Licenses cost more. Sometimes new laws are called for. Now that we have a little better law on the books we have to adress enforcement. Since the law was passed not one has been charged under the new law, even though I can point out at least fatal six crashes this season that fall under the new law. Some of my people are calling for even stricter laws, but I advise them to get the one we just passed enforced.

    Duck,

Have to say I agree with you regarding your example.  If the law isn't on the books, it needs to be changed.  However, it seems that there ARE a lot of laws out there, and that makes you right on your second point, enforcement is key.

$25 for killing a biker???  How crazy is that?  I'm sure glad someone got that one changed!

Re: New Laws are not needed

I personally think enforcement is the way to go.  Even the threat of enforcement.

I am a minority on the road, because I love when the marked police cars are with me.  Everyone immediately learns to drive.  They stay in their lane the whole way around the curves.  They don’t speed.  They use turn signals, and turn the direction that they signal.  They don’t run red lights.  All of this changes when they are not in plain view.  So they can drive they just chose not to.

    Good luck and ride safe,

    Mike
