    Braking

I often practice braking and feel it really helps when I get into situations that require it. I try to ride to a low traffic area of town or find a deserted parking lot at a school and practice quick stopping and quick stopping in a curve, both require practice to become proficient at it

Practice braking is a great idea.  Don't forget to add the power of engine braking as well.  It will shorten your braking significantly.  Also don't forget to allows look for an escape route.

    Good luck and ride safe,

sorry, make that always look for an escape route.  What can I say, I am a lousy proof reader.

Actually trying to use engine braking will make controlled quick stops MORE difficult as there is a tendancy for the rear wheel to lock up. Since the dominant braking force is applied through the front brake/ wheel is is best to practice braking with the clutch squeezed to take the engine pulses out of the picture. The rear tends to get lighter as weigh shifts forward reducing available traction on the rear wheel.
